I woke up in Reykjavik feeling refreshed and ready for adventure. We planned to pick up our rental car and trek out to the southeast coastal town of Vík, about two hours from Reykjavik. In between lies the Golden Circle, which is the most popular tourist area as it’s easily accessed from Reykjavik and contains a few of the country’s best-known natural wonders: waterfalls, lakes, glaciers and geysers.

Iceland Day One: Ice and Fire and Feelings
The first day of our grand adventure was full of ups and downs – perhaps fitting for the land of ice and fire.
We flew out of Newark at 8:45 pm and landed in Keflavik airport at 6:15 am.
Living the Nightmare: Packing
Before you live the dream, you must live the nightmare. I’m writing from my parents’ house in central PA, which means that I have sold all my belongings, moved out of my house, bid farewell to Philly, settled my cats in their new homes, and said goodbye to my friends. I’m spending the week hanging out at my mom’s house, getting things in order and visiting with family before the real journey begins. I’ll be writing a couple of posts to chronicle the transitionary period of the last few weeks.
Introductions
Hi! We’re Cara and Haider. We’re moving to Spain, and we wanted to start a blog to record our experiences, keep friends and family in the loop, and inform/inspire anyone who might be considering following in our footsteps.
We’ll be living in Madrid and working as English teaching assistants in the auxiliar de conversacion program through the Spanish Ministry of Education. We hope to post lots of useful information about this program and realities of expat life as time goes by, but in the meantime, feel free to reach out to us with any questions.
We’re a couple in our late twenties, and we enjoy traveling, hiking, camping, laughing, dancing, drinking, eating, pondering, learning, and many other -ings we may have yet to discover. While our close friends and peers are all getting married, buying houses and having babies, we’ve decided to leave behind our home in Philadelphia to embark on this open-ended adventure.
Cara has a professional background in e-commerce copywriting and plans to do as much freelance writing work as possible while we travel. A journalism junkie with a special fondness for NPR, she dreams of one day working in public radio. Haider has worked for years in the insurance field, has a degree in business, and is interested in pursuing a career in community development or international relations. If you’d like to hire one of us, please get in touch!
